Familiarity Breeds Business

by Terry Philpott

I get this question a lot – why are you always online? Why is your FaceBook always active? Why is it that you spend so much time telling everyone what you’re doing and what you’re thinking? Have you no sense of privacy? Whenever I open my FaceBook or Twitter account, you’re there – don’t you think you’re overdoing it?

And my answer is standard – it’s what I do and I do it for a reason, believe you me. I don’t do it merely because it fascinates me (well, it does but that’s not the point) but it helps me with my business.

This is where I go into grave detail about what I do and defend my predisposition for revealing so much information about myself – but I won’t. I will do it in a very simple, personal and easy-to-understand manner so that you can understand it the moment you read it. Well, not so much because you would have to spend a second or two thinking about what it means.

Familiarity Breeds Business.

That’s it. That’s the formula that I am using! Incredible, isn’t it? It sounds almost like rocket science! If you don’t get it, I’ll do you a favor by going a little deeper and I will give you a scenario.

Let’s just say you’ve started an online business or freelance business and you’ve got your blog going. But you need business – BADLY because the gas tank in your car isn’t going to fill itself up. And the internet is as faceless as you’re going to get and that is why bongcus people are lurking around at every cyber corner waiting to pounce on unsuspecting newbies.

Since everyone is faceless, what it means is that you could be a lunatic with internet access in one of those asylums or you could be a genuine business owner. You could be the mastermind behind one of the most profitable scam businesses in the world or you could be a smart single mother (OK, fine. Father too) who is out to make a buck or two.

Who’s to know which one fits your description? Nobody but you, that’s the problem. And social media networking is the answer….the bridge between the divide.

All I am doing is bringing forth my personality into an online world whereby people, even strangers (with caution, of course) can get to know ME better. Not my address, not my kids, not my phone number, not my bank account password….but I want them to get to know me better.

Now, if I were to be pitching for a large project against someone who is faceless and identity-less to a client, who do you think the client, with whom I’ve made a connection with, would prefer to hire?

EXACTLY!

So, listen up. Don’t be bothered with the number of updates, posts and pictures I post up on my Facebook and Twitter….I am not here to bother you or inundate you with the minor happenings in my life. I am revealing some truths to ME to you and if you’re not interested, that’s cool. But if you are, then that’s WAY COOLER!!!

In the future, you could be looking for a freelance writer or an online marketing consultant and the first name I want to pop into your head is mine. Well, all’s well if mine isn’t the first name but at the end of the day, I’ve hit a lot of notes with others as well.

Conventionally, this is called socializing or networking in the business world. So, now, with the internet, instead of going to karaokes with potential partners or buyers or splurging on an expensive dinner with a customer, share a little bit about yourself every now and then.

Some people won’t like you…this is the truth and I deal with them everyday because I cannot be perfect enough to make everyone happy – but at the end of the day, I’ve connected with as many people as possible and helped them understand me (and what I do) better.

If done right, there will be more people who like you compared to the number of people who wish your cat will eat your contact lenses.
