It’s All About The CONNECTION

July 28th, 2009

Social Bookmarks

I live and work and am friends with a whole bunch of people who basically are quite afraid of me. No, that’s wrong. They’re not really afraid of me but they’re really quite terrified whenever they log into their Facebook or Twitter accounts. They see my name everywhere….Marsha Maung this, Marsha Maung that.

They develop breathing difficulties after going out with me or have their pictures taken with me…..especially if it’s my camera that we used! Ha ha ha ha! Raise your hands if you’re one of them. Whoa!!!

Anyway, jokes aside, here’s the real thing about using online social networking tools for marketing and business. Two, actually. Three….oh, what the hell!

One, DON’T PUSH ME!! I am not an idiot and I don’t like being pushed. I hate it and ‘unfriend’ or ‘unfollow’ people on Facebook and Twitter when they start pushing stuff down my throat. I don’t make a connection with their many sales pitches and I get this really disturbing WTF feeling.

online social media networking

They’ve effective eliminated the word ‘social’ from the equation by using online networking instead of online social networking. They push and push and push their products and services down my throat all the time and I push back! I remove them.

Two, you have to make friends and be responsive. Being friendly and responsive is just one of the few elements of being effective online. Everyone is literally faceless and nameless out there because….who’s to know you’re not a talking parrot with a Twitter account squawking your way to prosperity, am I right?

So, this is what I do for a living. I network and make friends. I do not violate the privacy of others whenever I think that they prefer me not to reveal too much about them online. That’s rule number three. Respect others. Friends, you can breathe now.

You have to be concerned about others, learn about them and have ABSOLUTELY NO ULTERIOR MOTIVE (or at least TRY, for crying out loud). That’s very, very, very important. Having a humorous bone in your body works too, actually. People gravitate towards funny people.

Well, not everyone can crack jokes, that’s true but at least be inspiring. Sigh….go grab a quotes book or something, will ya, then? Share yourself with others and when they respond to you, you respond back. You make friends online and people get to know you better.

THAT’s the connection. THAT’s how you work online social networking.

Granted, some people are very private people so, create a character or a personality, then. I have a friend whose name shall remain nameless and faceless till today who created a personality and people gravitate to her like I’ve never seen. She shares secrets with others freely knowing that no one really knows who she is.

But per chance, someone is looking for a person who can do what she does, they look for her!

Why? Simple! They like her, they have a……yes, CONNECTION!

So please….stop pushing products and services online, you’re giving people like me a rreeeeeaaaaalllllyyyyy bad name.
