who is internet

Who is the internet, mom?” asks my seven-year-old son innocently, eyes like saucers.

Painfully trying to hold back laughter, I answered, “Well, the internet is actually a whole bunch of computers connected to each other via the telephone lines. It’s a lot of people….a lot of computers, darlin’”

He looked totally confused. “But mom, how do computers pay you? You said that you write on the internet and the internet pays you and you can’t live without the internet!”

Oh, my poor baby.

This brings me around to discussing with some friends and now writing about how people are actually making use of the internet. For me, obviously, I use it because it’s my LIFE! Ha ha. Not funny.

I use it for….

  • Work
  • Research
  • Finding long, lost ex-boyfriends
  • Writing nasty stuff in blogs owned and written by people I hate
  • Discuss how our government is screwing up our lives
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Blog-hop
  • Play games
  • Find recipes
  • Make friends
  • Market myself

And you don’t believe me when I say that the internet is my life, right?

It turns out that the rest of the world (probably YOU included) use the internet for the very same reasons too. Except they don’t sleep with it.

One, they use the internet to socialize with friends, clients and communicate with other human beings (hopefully). It’s interesting because people find it very comforting to know that through the computer screen, you get to talk to and communicate with so many people from all over the world. In fact, in some cases, air flights should be rendered unnecessary if not for the fact that we love traveling and GETTING AWAY once in a while.

Entertainment – yes, we use the internet to amuse ourselves or learn new things. Youtube is, of course, one of the biggest source of entertainment for adults and kids alike. There’s just so much that you can see on the internet compared to cable TV! We also use it to learn about why our backs are aching, why our kid’s fever won’t go away and how to fix a tire.

And then there are the games.

Work – Of course we use it to work. Some run online businesses, some work from home, part-timers rely on the internet to complete projects, freelancers (like me) will die without internet connection and some update their websites very often. Without it, it’s like cutting off one of our limbs.

There could be (I am sure of it) more but it’ll be a novel when I finish, so, I’ll end it here.
