De-stressing Needed For Freelancers
Marsha Maung
March 23rd, 2010

Sure, freelance writers like me do not need to punch the clock, battle the long, tiresome traffic, be embroiled in lot of finger pointing in the corporate world and make excuses for lateness in work. We don't and it IS a good thing. But a freelancer is not really living a free-for-all-no-need-to-do-work-I-am-the-boss lifestyle either.

You see, when you work for yourself as a freelance writer, you ARE the boss and if you don't work, you earn no mullah. Therefore, you will push your own tolerance level and limits to do as much work as possible so that you can earn as much as possible. That spells stress, folks.

First, you need the discipline to get to work. And then you need the discipline to stop work because when you are working as a freelancer, the ball is forever in your court. It is always your call. You can say 'yes yes yes!!' and 'more more more!!!' but you also have to learn how to say 'no, thank you' sometimes. Otherwise, learn how to spell 'burnout' so that you can update your Facebook status update with that.

Some people find that going to the gym loosens up their muscles and frees their mind. I know, and I agree. But for some freelance writers who are MOTHERS, ah-hah! That's where the problem is. For some of us, we can't help us. Thank goodness for Nintendo Wii's Dance Dance Revolution game because that is what I do to get my dose of exercise.

But with that said, freelance writers and other at-home workers need to get out. Being out in the punishing sun for a few hours, meeting with friends for lunch and walking around aimlessly in a mall for forty-five minutes will do a lot of good to you.

You need to get out and see some people sometimes because unlike others who are employed, you don't have watercooler moments. You don't get to turn around and discuss your kids' unhealthy internet habits. You also do not have someone to complain to when your husband forgets your birthday. Of course, life is a little better with the introduction of sites like Twitter and Facebook but for most freelance writers like me, we have our clients in there as well and Twitter is a free-for-all, hence, you have to 'complain carefully' when you are in there. Not much fun in doing that, honestly.

All in all, freelance writers need to de-stress as well. Don't let everything in life slip away even when you are strapped to a good life of writing as and when you want...and in your bunny slippers.
